Television

One of my close friends posted on her blog that she is trying to sell her T.V. because she doesn't watch it anymore. I almost gasp! I thought to myself " how will she unwind at the end of the day" and " how lonely" she will feel.

I don't know about you, but I'm a case of what I like to call, the" low key" T.V. dependence. I find that I spend more time in the apartment with the TV on ( volume at a moderate level), while I perform other activities (I know I know, OK HORRIBLE use of energy) than I do actually watching it. There's something about its presence that makes me feel like I'm not alone. Sometimes it even feels like a party! (OK too far?)

The point I'm trying to make is that although I do consistently watch some T.V. shows, I think it's interesting that the initial shock of hearing that my friend doesn't want her T.V. anymore was more related to my T.V.-background noise dependence rather than an actual addiction to watching it. Am I alone here?

Robot Houses?

I recently had a conversation with my father about the development of "smart technology" in houses. The helpful apps and resources that some of us utilize through our smart [cell] phones will soon be installed in houses. I can't help but think about that Disney movie (gosh what is the name!?) where a family installs a robot into their house system and " she" talks, greets you when you enter the home and responds to any request, instantly. Creepy! I'm not one for Sci-fi stories, but this sounds pretty close to the story of the machine taking over the world!

This also makes me think about how lazy technology can allow us to be.

Until the next-

Life at a slower pace

As I mentioned earlier, I have been out of the country on vacation for the past two weeks and upon return all that I can say is that life is much richer the slower that we move.

I repeatedly return to this theme: a social commentary on the excessively fast pace that metropolitan U.S. resides in. I repeat that it is excessive and I'm reminded of how ridiculous and how short tempered the U.S. city dwellers are when I think about the obsolete concept of a " fast-food" restaurant in many other countries. The food may remain similar (processed and high-caloric) but the experience is worlds apart.

Below is a small comparison chart I've created to give you a better idea.

McDonalds (US)
Serves burgers and fries? Yes
Drive-thru window? Yes
Order at the counter? Yes
Provides hard copies of Menus? No
Has a hostess? No
Self-seating or seating by hostess? Self-seating
Great costumer service? Debatable, usually No
Average amount of time costumer spends waiting for food?( this is my own approximation) 1-2 minutes

McDonalds (non-US)

Serves burgers and fries? Yes
Drive-thru window? No
Order at the counter? No
Provides hard copies of Menus? Yes
Has a hostess? Yes
Self-seating or seating by hostess? Seated by hostess
Great costumer service? Also debatable
Average amount of time costumer spends waiting for food?( this is my own approximation) 15-20 minutes

At the end of the day, my only question is that if both US and non-US locations are serving essentially the same food, why the time difference in food preparation/arrival?
